County 1/92 – Warwickshire

Located in the centre of England neighbouring the West Midlands conurbation my “home county” is perhaps most famously known as the birthplace of William Shakespeare.

The county town of Warwick boasts the fine Warwick castle as its’ centrepiece, Nuneaton however is the largest town in the County.

Stratford-upon-Avon is the birthplace of William Shakespeare and as such is a magnet for international tourism.

Warwickshire came into being as a division of the kingdom of Mercia in the early 11th century. The first reference to Warwickshire was in 1001, as Wæringscīr named after Warwick (meaning “dwellings by the weir“).

During the Middle Ages Warwickshire was dominated by Coventry, which was at the time one of the most important cities in England due to its textiles trade in the heart of England. Warwickshire played a key part in the English Civil War, with the Battle of Edgehill and other skirmishes taking place in the county. During the Industrial Revolution Warwickshire became one of Britain’s foremost industrial counties, with the large industrial cities of Birmingham and Coventry within its boundaries.

History of the Flag

warks_flag

The medieval earldom created in 1088 was held to be inheritable through a female line of descent, and thus was held by members of several families. It was traditionally associated with possession of Warwick Castle. The heraldic device of the Earls of Warwick, the bear and ragged staff, is believed to derive from two legendary Earls, Arthal and Morvidus. Arthal meaning bear, while Morvidus was believed to have slain a giant with a young ash tree torn up by the roots.
